So as we've established by now, Darrell Issa thinks very little of 9/11 rescue workers and would prefer that the federal government not concern itself with their welfare.  Cause according to him, 9/11 is not and presumably was not a national issue.  We've also established that he has no qualms about throwing federal money around on local pork as long as it benefits him directly.  So the next logical question for me is "oh hey, are there any familiar names that don't mind taking Darrell Issa's money?"  As you may or may not know, Darrell Issa is filthy rich.  So he's spread a lot of money around on Republicans and conservative causes.  So as it turns out, there are quite a lot of Republicans currently running around the Capitol funded in part by Darrell Issa (partial list):

Hello everyone! Before I get to the substance of this diary, I'd like to introduce myself quickly. My name is Benjamin Haskin (Ben, preferably) and I am 20 years old. I'm born, raised, and currently reside in Chautauqua County, New York (born in the city of Jamestown, moved to the county seat of Mayville, which
I still consider home, after kindergarten). I graduated from Chautauqua Lake Central School (CLCS) in 2006 in the top ten of my class (7th), but not the top ten percent (alas, only 63 students in the Class of '06), which is one of my biggest regrets in life. My parents, both lifelong Democrats and teachers (mom, Judy-kindergarten, formerly special ed in the Jamestown school system; dad, Brian- special ed/computers at CLCS) have served as inspirations to me politically and personally, and have both played major roles in me developing into the ardent Dem I am today. I am a lifelong history buff (read through a middle school text book in 1st grade) and (CONFESSION ALERT) due to this aspired to be a Republican until Age 8, as Ulysses (in all fairness it's a rad name) S. Grant was my favorite President for a very short time. But by 9 I had learned to reason and my transition from the Dark Side was complete.

This past Friday I was privileged to attend a fundraising luncheon with Dr. Dean as the honored guest and featured speaker.

Howard Dean was in Chicago for a luncheon sponsored by Illinois Victory 2008 supporting down-ticket candidates, most importantly our suburban area Congressional candidates, including OTB candidate Dan Seals.

I have often posted my strong support for Howard Dean's 50-State Strategy on this blog and others.  Of the national party leaders, having already met Senator Obama, Congressman Emanual, and several others, Dr. Dean was the one national leader I really wanted to meet face-to-face.

Howard Dean spoke to us in great detail about programs the DNC has put into place which IMHO are a huge part of our current and continuing success.

We have a tough fight out in the Illinois 6th district. One Term Republican congressman Peter Roskam against Jill Morgenthaler.  Jill is a vet, a retired Colonel, a bronze star winner with 30 years of active and reserve military service. She did ten months in Iraq and has served in a bunch of other hot spots in her career.  She has worked at the Argonne National Laboratory and as the Illinois Homeland Security Advisor.

The fight has suddenly gotten very loud and very dirty, at least on the RED side. It must be that they fear the coat tails effect of the Obama wave. The Roskam campaign is hitting hard with an extremely negative campaign that is full of slurs and lies.

In the last election, Tammy Duckworth was also very unfairly maligned by Roskam. She is also an Iraqi War Hero, a triple amputee Helicopter Pilot and would have been good for Vets and the middle class in Illinois. She almost won, but was a victim of another Republican dirty smear campaign. John McCain chose to come out and campaign against this fellow vet, to fight against her while supporting a rich trial lawyer. I for one will not forgive him for that.

My good friend Colonel Jill Morgenthaler is the Democratic candidate for Congress from the Sixth District of Illinois. She’s running a strong campaign to unseat Congressman Peter Roskam. Those of us from Illinois know how extreme and how wrong Roskam is on almost every issue that matters to our nation – his support of Bush’s failed policies in Iraq, Bush’s giveaways to oil companies, and of course the deregulation that led to chaos on Wall Street.

Seemingly Lost in the battle for President and in defeating Mark Kirk, is the race for Congressional District 6 - Henry Hyde's old stomping grounds. District six is now occupied by Peter "Rubber Stamp" Roskam. I have seen no polls on the current race between Jill Morganthaler and Roskam, but in 2006 Roskam beat Tammy Duckworth by a mere 51%-49% - hardly an unbeatable majority. Now I will be happy to see Dan Seals kick Kirk to the ground, but I'm dismayed at the lack of attention the IL-6 race is getting (as well as Bill Foster battling to keep his seat against xenophobe Jim Oberweis, But I will get to that one later). Yesterday morning my wife and I went in and voted early.  We live in Chicago and there was a great turn out we thought, no lines but every station was filled at about 10am.  We had to wait a bit and then within like 5 minutes we each got to vote.  I was used to voting in my old polling place on election day where it was always pretty thin in 2006 and 2004.  This time was different, an interesting cross section of voters; young and old, many different ethnic backgrounds, men and women, it was exciting - saw some Obama gear being worn by the voters - it is Chicago though.  A good and helpful staff too.

Below you'll also see a focus on the IL-06 race between Morganthaler and Roskam, they just kind of floated to me in their televised debate.

Jill Morgenthaler's campaign for the Illinois 6th district got a tremendous boost with a great endorsement from none other than the right leaning home town paper, The Chicago Tribune. Jill is in a fight led by a well funded experienced negative campaigner (and Trial Lawyer) Peter Roskam. (So, not only favorite son Obama gets the nod, but Jill in the 6th gets a boost too!) Here is the endorsement published 10/21:

Two years ago, Rep. Peter Roskam eked out a narrow victory in the west suburban 6th District over Tammy Duckworth. Now he faces another smart woman with military experience, Democrat Jill Morgenthaler, who served for 30 years in the Army Reserve. She ran the Illinois homeland security office from 2005 to 2007 and calls herself an "Army colonel, businesswoman, mom."

Roskam has a generally solid voting record, but he lends his name to some causes that would turn Congress into a busybody. He has co-sponsored a bill that would push the Defense Department to ban Playboy and R-rated movies from sale on military bases. He supports another bill that could put the clamps on in-vitro fertilization. Finally, Roskam opposes the expansion of O'Hare International Airport. That's a key issue for this region—and Morgenthaler is right to support expansion. She gets the nod.

HR 4157 with the misleading title "The sanctity of Human Life Act, which is co-sponsored by freshman congressman Peter "Rubber Stamp" Roskam, declares that life starts at fertilization (not conception – fertilization, more on this later). This means an embryo, or more accurately a zygote, created by the act of fertilization, whether by natural means or with medical help, has all the rights of any person currently walking and breathing. Don’t believe me? A sample:

...the life of each human being begins with fertilization, cloning, or its functional equivalent, irrespective of sex, health, function or disability, defect, stage of biological development, or condition of dependency, at which time every human being shall have all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.

This legislation is stunning in its simplicity (the bill is only three pages long) and would redefine all current requirements for the term "Human Life," as it applies to laws, Statutes, or even constitutional protections.

Be afraid.

Many questions are unanswered about Peter Roskam's brief record in the Illinois sixth district. His failure to debate, to defend or explain his record to the people of the district is disturbing.

His extremely negative campaign currently running on TV and Radio is despicable and cowardly, besides being filled with untruths and distortions. We don't think that this kind of politics is in line with the needs or ethics of the 6th district. His positions are extreme and out of sync with the district.

Fact: he votes with Bush over 90% of the time. Fact: he votes in favor of tax breaks for Big Oil. Fact: he voted against veterans benefits. Fact: he is co-sponsoring a bill that will censor literature sold on military bases. Fact: he is against abortion even if the health of the mother is at risk. Fact: he voted against the bailout, twice.

The fact is that Peter Roskam doesn't deserve another term as our congressman. We need Jill Morgenthaler.

There is new life and new hope in the Jill Morgenthaler campaign in the Illinois 6th district. Jill has a new TV buy here and is getting some great endorsements from not only the Chicago Tribune but also the smaller local papers as well. Here is her commercial:

It's all about "Franking" privileges. The small print gets complicated and boring pretty quick. But the bottom line is that you can't use taxpayer money for campaign mailings. And that's what Roskam has been up to. So it's going to be investigated in Congress.

I'm not sure it's a deal breaker for Roskam. Just another piece of the slime trail that he leaves behind as he runs his dirty filthy campaign against Jill Morgenthaler.

He is running an ad that goes on and on about how Jill will raise taxes. Raise them on single people, married people, businesses, well, just everyone my god! Don't know where they come up with this BS. Jill certainly didn't say I'm going to raise your taxes!

Final note: Roskam was invited to debate by a third party and he refused. He won't defend his record or explain his voting record in a public forum.

We are detecting the whiff of fear in the Roskam campaign. Why else in the world would they erect a website that showcases Obama voters who are rushing out to vote for Republican Peter Roskam. Here it is on Hardball.

Here is a quote from the site:

“First of all, I’m a member of the mutual admiration society for Peter Roskam,” Obama is prominently quoted as saying on the Web site’s home page. “He is terrific.” The quote from Obama comes from 2004, when he and Roskam were serving together in the Illinois state Senate.

We need Senator Obama to Endorse Jill Morgenthaler, publicly, loudly, on the record, from where ever he is campaigning. Today, Tomorrow, He just has to say it to the press.

Peter Roskam will do anything or say anything to win.  He's now put out three false mailers and a website trying to suck in Obama voters.  He's also possibly illegally having local mayors send out endorsement letters on official-looking letterhead.

Halloween has come and gone, but our nightmare in the IL-06 continues. We are trapped in Roskam World. In Roskam World, big oil money dictates the decisions Congress makes.
In Roskam World, abortion is banned - even in cases of rape, incest or when a woman's life is in danger. In Roskam's world, President Bush is right over 93% of the time. Roskam World votes have ended up terrorizing our 401k's.

It is a world of extremism and horror. We don't need to stay in Roskam World anymore.
